Montane Collection- First Light
First Light was inspired by early morning drives through the mountains during late spring/early summer. My favourite time of the year. Watching the sun rise over the towering peaks leaves me in awe every single time! The sun feels warmer, brighter and sometimes we are lucky enough to spot a furry friend along the roadside as we journey to our destination somewhere in the Rockies.
First Light just so happens to be one of my favourite Hozier songs that symbolizes emerging from a dark period of life and coming into the light. It celebrates a fresh start and leaving a past version of yourself behind. So… one piece, two meanings?
This piece showcases the vast diversity of colour and grain among cedar trees. Each sunbeam is thoughtfully placed to compliment the piece next to it. First Light is finished with a generous application of tung oil to enhance the colour and grain but also protect the stunning cedar.

The sky in First Light is made of reclaimed cedar I’ve collected from different spots across Alberta over the years. The mountains are made of cedar purchased from an individual selling their “scraps” for firewood. I’d say it looks far better as mountains than ash in a fire pit! The frame is made of pine 1x2s.
